Most people do. We take reasonable precautions because we want our homes—and the people inside them—to be safe.
Judaism teaches us that there is another kind of protection as well.
A mezuzah on the doorpost is one of the most recognizable signs of a Jewish home. The Torah commands us to place the words of the Shema on the doorposts of our homes, and our Sages teach that a kosher mezuzah carries with it a special power of Divine protection for the home and its inhabitants—even when they are away from home.
Why Is This Especially Important Now?
At a time when so many Jews are thinking about safety and protection, it is an especially meaningful time to make sure that this important mitzvah is being fulfilled properly.
And as we prepare for the new Jewish year, it is an opportune time to make sure our mezuzot are in good shape.
A Mezuzah Is Only as Good as the Scroll Inside
It is easy to assume that if something looks like a mezuzah, it is a kosher mezuzah. But there are many detailed requirements involved in writing one.
The scroll must be handwritten by a qualified scribe on specially prepared parchment, using specific ink and writing techniques. The Hebrew letters must be formed correctly, the text must contain exactly the required passages, and even small errors can affect the halachic status of the mezuzah.
That is why mezuzot should be checked by an experienced and knowledgeable scribe.
A mezuzah that has been hanging on your door for years may look perfectly fine from the outside, while the scroll inside may have become damaged, developed an issue, or even never been kosher in the first place.

Where do I drop off my mezuzot to be checked?
Please remove the scrolls from their cases and place them in a Ziploc bag.
Include a piece of paper inside the bag with your name and phone number.
Drop them at the Wineberg home:

Where are the new mezuzot being sourced, and what is their kashrut standard?
The mezuzot come from Israel and are produced under the authority of the Tav Pikuach Chabad Institute, led by Dayan Rabbi Chaim Kizner and Rabbi Alexander Drori, experts in their fields with decades of experience.
The Institute conducts periodic sample checks by external rabbis and proofreaders to ensure that high standards are consistently maintained. The mezuzot are manually checked as well as computer-screened for mistakes.
These are high-quality, carefully checked kosher mezuzot.
Who will be checking the mezuzot locally?
Rabbi Yisroel Chanowitz is a respected scribe and shochet living in the Toco Hills neighborhood. He will be checking all the mezuzot that are submitted.
